10 Things You Should Know About Coffee

know your coffee

Coffee is a unique beverage in that you either love it or you hate it. Some people swear by it as a means to wake up in the morning. Others drink coffee throughout the day to keep them going. However, whether you love it or hate it, there are some things that you may not know about coffee. Here are some interesting facts for you to ponder.

1. Where Does Coffee Come From? Coffee only grows in certain climates, namely the ones nearest the equator along what is known as the “Bean Belt.” Hawaii is the only state in the U.S. that grows coffee, known as Kona coffee, while Brazil produces 30% of the world’s coffee. The second leading producer of coffee is Columbia. However, more than 53 countries grow coffee worldwide.

2. The Coffee Plant. It is arguable whether to call what coffee grows on a bush or a tree, but either way, the coffee bean does not just grow off a branch by itself. It is actually a green seed inside a berry. The seed is removed, roasted and then packaged as coffee beans. The berry from which a coffee bean comes from is comparable to a cherry. The two species of coffee plant that are used for consumption are the Arabica and the Robusta. One coffee tree yields approximately one pound of coffee each year.

3. How Many Calories Are You Consuming? Black coffee has no calories. That’s right! No calories! The way calories add up is what you put in with your coffee. With the options of cream, sugar and syrups, the calories can add up quickly. Keep that in mind if you are trying to cut down your calorie intake. You don’t need to stop drinking coffee altogether, just hold back on the extras you put into it. Thirty million people in the U.S. purchase specialty coffee drinks each day.

4. Caffeine: Good or Bad? Caffeine is one of the defining characteristics of coffee. For those of you who have heartburn problems, you might want to cut down on your coffee intake or switch over to decaf, because caffeine is known for increasing heartburn symptoms. However, beware of decaf because it is not completely caffeine free, it’s more of a reduced level of caffeine that can still add up if you drink too many cups of it. On the other hand, the caffeine is also cited as being beneficial for increased thought flow.

5. National Coffee Day. National Coffee Day is held on September 29. On that day, some businesses give away free or discounted cups of coffee. Some greeting card companies have even gone so far as to create National Coffee Day cards you can send to your friends or coworkers who are as addicted to coffee as you are.

6. How Many Cups Do We Drink? More than 400 billion cups of coffee are consumed every year. Seattle is known for its coffee enthusiasts and the people who live there consume more coffee per capita than in any other city in the United States. The coffee industry makes approximately 60 billion dollars annually worldwide.

7. Coffee vs. Water. Coffee is the second largest world commodity. The first is oil. It is also the second most popular drink in the world after water. More than half of the U.S. population over the age of 18 consumes at least one cup of coffee every morning. Women state that they drink coffee to relax and men tend to say that coffee helps them get their work done.

8. Coffee-Scented Stamps. In 2001, Brazil produced a coffee-scented stamp to promote its commodity. It is said that the smell lasts between 3 to 5 years.

9. To Freeze or Not to Freeze? Freezing coffee has been said to be a good way to keep it fresh, but as it turns out, the coffee bean easily extracts the flavors of things around it, making it susceptible to changing taste when stored in the freezer. Coffee grounds stay fresh for approximately two weeks outside of the freezer if stored in an airtight container. If stored next to fish or other smellier foods in the freezer, the coffee will adopt that taste, so even if it remains fresh longer, it won’t seem like it with the taste being skewed in that way.

10. Can I Drink Coffee When I’m Pregnant? There has been research for and against the consumption of coffee during pregnancy. The current recommendation is to consume no more than 300 mg of caffeine each day, and that doesn’t just include coffee, but all sources of caffeine. Whether you are pregnant or not, caffeine intake should be limited. The fatal level of caffeine is the equivalent of 100 cups of coffee at approximately 100 to 200 mg per cup.

Samsung Fourth South East Asia, Oceania and Taiwan Forum 2013 Discover the World of Possibilities

Depth of innovation demonstrated by the company’s monumental UHD TV, Premium F8000 LED TV, “Made for Asia” refrigerator and new Wobble Washer, NX300 Camera and 45mm 2D/3D lens and Series 7 Chronos PC. Samsung’s complete portfolio will be on display at the Samsung South East Asia, Oceania and Taiwan Forum in Ballroom 2 at the Mulia Hotel in Jakarta.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd unveiled new products and services at the Samsung South East Asia, Oceania and Taiwan Forum 2013 in Jakarta. Through its understanding and insight of what consumers need in the region, Samsung’s 2013 lineup of products demonstrates the company’s commitment to Asia and its vision where technology enables consumers to discover a world of possibilities.

In 2012, Samsung Electronics achieved record sales of approximately $187 billion. In South East Asia, Oceania and Taiwan, the company achieved 63 percent revenue growth in 2012 and retained its number one position in TVs, monitors, and refrigerators. Samsung also built on the momentum and retained its leadership as the number one brand for mobile phones and smartphones.

Delivering on this promise, Samsung unveiled a new paradigm in television, smart appliances, connected cameras and mobile devices. Sharing innovations from different areas of its business, Samsung has reinvigorated the consumer electronics market with seamless navigation, intuitive control and personalized user experiences.

Creating the Ultimate Lean Back Experience
In 2012, Samsung demonstrated leadership across all of its categories, including the TV market. The company achieved 16 percent growth in revenue and 14 percent growth in unit sales in the total regional TV market last year. Following this success, Samsung is opening a new world of possibilities in home entertainment this year.

Leading its charge to deliver the ultimate lean back experience to consumers in the region, Samsung launched its flagship F8000 LED TV, the first Samsung television to feature a quad-core processor. Available in sizes up to 75-inches, the F8000 features an ultra-thin profile, a quarter-inch thick bezel and a wave inspired Arc stand that makes the TV look as if it is simply floating in the air.

Samsung also introduced its first 85-inch Ultra High Definition TV (UHD TV), the 85S9. The 85S9’s stunning Timeless Gallery design sets a new standard for TV craftsmanship, with the TV appearing to float within its frame and juxtaposing its classic minimalism with the imposing 85-inch display.

The design is aesthetically pleasing while functional: the 85S9 includes Samsung’s “One Connect” feature that eliminates cable clutter by requiring only one cable to connect to the TV, creating a perfect Clean Back look.

The 85S9 offers the resolution of Full HD displays to deliver unmatched picture detail and clarity. It can also up-convert HD content to Full HD and UHD resolution, offering a new world of viewing experiences. In addition, Samsung is addressing the current conflicting UHD content industry standards to ease purchasing concerns and to ensure that users will be able to view UHD content for years to come.

Samsung is also the first TV brand to offer support for the new high compression video codec, HEVC, which delivers higher streaming video quality over lower bandwidth so content will consistently look amazing. Finally, to deliver an audio performance to match the screen excellence of this year’s new TVs, Samsung introduced the HT-F9750W.

The HT-F9750W is Samsung’s flagship 7.1 channel home theater system that is the perfect companion to its 2013 Smart TVs. The system features a 1,330-watt sound system for unprecedented sound quality and exceptional viewing experience, and it is powered by Samsung’s Gallium Nitride amplifier and vacuum tube amplifier to create a pure, natural sound. Additionally, HD content can be up-scaled to UHD picture quality, thanks to Samsung’s 4K Scaler Processor.

Introducing the next Evolution in Televisions
Each of Samsung’s newest televisions provides a new world of possibilities in search, navigation and control. Samsung’s newly redesigned Smart Hub intelligently organizes a viewer’s content into clear, intuitive panels. The three panels include: Apps; Photos, Videos and Music; and Social. Navigating these three Smart Hub panels is easier than ever before, thanks to enhanced Smart Interaction.

In 2012, Samsung pioneered motion and voice controls to navigate the TV. In 2013, these control capabilities have been enhanced. For example, not only can consumers now use their hands to select content, they can now rotate images, or simply zoom in and out.  Voice controls were also enhanced, with 2013 Smart TV models understanding about 300 commands with improved language recognition rates.

Drawing on Samsung’s mobile leadership, the navigation experience is reminiscent of that found on its smartphones. Samsung’s S-Recommendation with Voice Interaction technology—available in select markets such as Australia—is a personal guide to discovering new and preferred content on Samsung Smart TVs.

In fact, the new landing screen on Samsung’s 2013 Smart TV features On TV, the world’s first TV service to analyze on-air viewing habits and offer personalized program suggestions in real-time, enabling users to enjoy the ultimate lean-back experience. On TV is currently only available in the Australian market.

Samsung’s improved Voice Interaction technology will change what people think is possible from a television; it is now capable of understanding full sentences and natural language. Coupled with S-Recommendation, viewers can ask the Smart TV for movie and TV show suggestions or request films that feature specific actors or actresses. Searches aggregate relevant results from all available on-air or app services.

This advanced user experience has been expanded to smartphones and tablets, thanks to Samsung’s leadership in connectivity. Viewers can use their devices as a remote control or simultaneously enjoy two different pieces of content from a TV or Blu-ray player on a second screen. They can also mirror their Smart TV content on a tablet to take it with them around the home.

Additionally, Samsung delivered on its 2012 CES promise of bringing the next evolution of TVs with the introduction of its 2013 Evolution Kit. By simply adding the Evolution Kit to a Samsung Smart TV, users can have access to the latest Samsung Smart TV offerings. Owners of compatible TVs will be able to benefit from S-Recommendation with Voice Interaction, the new Smart Hub, as well as the quad core support of the 2013 range.

Creating Smarter, Connected Homes
Based on an in-depth understanding of consumers’ needs, Samsung offers fresh perspectives with its new range of “Made for Asia” appliances.

The new Samsung refrigerator (RT38) offers maximum organization and use of space, thanks to unique features, such as the Easy Slide shelf for effortless storing and removal of food, and a detachable Multi Storage Basket for items like cosmetics, medicines or special sauces. The new Samsung refrigerator features MoistFresh Zone, which controls air circulation to maintain optimal humidity, creating an ideal environment to store and keep vegetables and fruit fresh for a long time. Additionally, the refrigerator can cool down to the target temperature in a short amount of time, all by pushing the “Power Cool” button on the display. This convenient mode can reduce waiting time for cooling when needed.

Sporting a contemporary design with a solid finish, the new Samsung refrigerator promises a 10-year warranty on its Digital Inverter Compressor. Additional features include excellent cooling performance, energy savings and noise reduction.

The new Samsung Wobble washing machine (WA16) features Samsung’s Wobble Technology, which prevents fabric damage caused by friction without compromising washing performance. The machine boasts shaped fins and built-in rollers around the drum to create a multi-directional washing flow resulting in cleaner clothes. In addition, the Wobble washer incorporates Samsung’s innovative Digital Inverter Motor (DIM), advanced technology that contributes to long-lasting durability and extends the washer’s lifetime. The DIM, with a guaranteed 11-year warranty for consumers in South East Asia, is brushless and contains minimal moving parts, meaning there is less chance of parts wearing out or breaking, leading to a longer lifespan.

To enable expert cooking capabilities to consumers, Samsung’s Smart Oven (MC32F606) features smart sensor technology, respectively. The appliance was built to help consumers save storage space in the kitchen, as well as save time and effort when preparing healthy, tasty meals.

To round things up, Samsung’s NaviBot CornerClean (VR10F71) boasts zero blind spots and cleans a variety of surfaces from corner to corner. The POP-OUTTM brush and Visionary MappingTM Plus system, paired with dust awareness sensors, make it one of the leading robot cleaners available.

Capturing Images for Every Moment
Samsung is staying true to its SMART CAMERA vision, delivering the latest and greatest camera technology and driving change in the digital imaging landscape. As the newest addition to its NX-range, the NX300 blends exceptional image quality and capture capabilities with increased speed and shot control.

The NX300 is complemented by the Samsung’s NX 45mm F1.8 2D/3D lens, the first one-lens 3D system for a consumer camera, capable of capturing both still pictures and full 1080p HD video. This new lens opens up an exciting world of 3D imaging possibilities and makes the Samsung NX Series the only interchangeable lens camera supporting both 3D still and 3D movie.

Central to the NX300’s outstanding imaging performance is its new 20.3 Megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, capable of capturing high quality images for every user. A newly designed Hybrid Auto Focus (AF) system delivers fast, accurate phase and contrast detection, while the 1/6000 second shutter speed and 8.6fps continuous shooting mode ensures every moment is captured perfectly. Also, Samsung’s unique DRIMe IV imaging engine provides outstanding developments in speed and quality photography and enables better color reproduction and greater noise reduction. Support for full 1080p HD video capture in both 2D and 3D—when combined with Samsung’s new 45mm F1.8 2D/3D lens—is also available through the DRIMe IV engine capabilities.

For a seamless photography experience, the NX300’s 84mm (3.31 inch) AMOLED screen comes complete with a tilt display allowing cherished memories to be captured from any angle, high and low, while making it effortless to review images. Completing the intuitive feel for the NX300 camera, the distinct AMOLED screen is hybrid with touch screen capabilities and 5-way manual key interface.

In addition, Samsung will be releasing the GALAXY Camera (Wi-Fi). The GALAXY Camera (Wi-Fi) delivers the same innovative photography experience that the GALAXY Camera does but without a 3G/4G connection. This allows users to merge a complete Android™ 4.1 (Jelly Bean) experience with professional style photography but without a monthly data plan. Users are still able to use the dual-band Wi-Fi technology to download the latest photo editing apps, share photos with family and friends through social networking sites or upload their photos and videos to cloud services when connected to Wi-Fi.

And for partners, it is a consolidated built-in solution that allows broader access to enterprises.

Hakata IPPUDO Malaysia at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia 一風堂

Hakata IPPUDO Pavilion Kuala Lumpur

IPPUDO is finally in Malaysia! Hakata IPPUDO is a Japanese ramen chain restaurant famous for its Shiromaru and Akamaru ramen. Hakata IPPUDO ramen is originated from Hakata, Fukuoka distric in Kyushu, Japan. By the way, IPPUDO in Japanese means “one wind hall”. I was invited to first Hakata IPPUDO outlet in Malaysia pre-opening night for food tasting. On that evening, after I had my bowl of Kara-men at Hakata IPPUDO at Pavilion KL, I was blown away to Fukuoka Japan hehehe…

We started with some appetizers and side dishes then followed by our main of course the ramen!

Karaka-men Ramen

Karaka-men Ramen RM28
I decide to choose Kara-men it’s the spicier choice, original tonkutsu broth with spicy miso and ground pork. The soup is quite light and not too oily. The ramen is springy and the sweetness and aroma of the tonkatsu broth is ichiban, satisfied. The level of spiciness in Kara-men is mild, I had to add some chilli flakes. I shall visit again for the Akamaru Shinaji and I am going to add Chashu and Onsen Tamago (poached egg).

Shiromaru Motoaji Ramen

Shiromaru Motoaji Ramen RM26
This is the classic Hakata style ramen, anything original can never go wrong. IPPUDO's original tonkotsu broth, white or sort of milky colour served with ultra-thin noodles, bean sprouts, kikurage and spring onions. I heard that this soup base is made from pork bones and simmered for many hours.

Akamaru Shinaji Ramen

Akamaru Shinaji Ramen RM28
This Akamaru Shinaji seems to be the favourite. It’s more refined and modern style ramen. IPPUDO’s original tonkatsu broth enhanced with special blended miso paste and fragrant garlic oil served with thin noodles, belly chashu, kikurage and spring onions.

Appetizers and Side Dishes

Goma Q

Goma Q
Sliced Japanese cucumber with sesame and some chilly flakes. The Japanese cucumber is fresh, crunchy and light.

Crispy Corn

Crispy Corn
For lighter bite, you may try on the smoky flavoured deep-fried young corn with seaweed seasoning. Crisp and addictive, it was an excellent pick-me-up if you were looking for something tasty and healthy to nibble on.

Curry Cheese Haru Maki

Curry Cheese Haru Maki
This is crispy and creamy curry spring rolls is so addictive, ah must eat it when its still hot and don’t forget to dip a little bit of that mustard sauce.

Pork Bun

Pork Bun
Steamed fluffy bun with braised pork and a little spread of IPPUDO’s special sauce, tender sweet pork slice and crisp lettuce.

Spicy Shrimp Mayo

Spicy Shrimp Mayo
Lightly battered and deep fried prawn with homemade spicy mayonnaise dip. I like the spicy mayonnaise that give the deep fried prawn some kick.

Hakata Style Soup Gyoza

Hakata Style Soup Gyoza
This Hakata Style Soup Gyoza in pork broth added with ginger and has 5 pieces of homemade gyoza / dumplings. The soup really warmed up my stomach.

I like the modest and modern ramen outlet especially the wall decoration using soup spoon and bowl. The waiter and waitress are quite attentive and friendly. Hakata IPPUDO ramen is available in many countries such as Japan (origin), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, New York City - USA, Singapore, Hong Kong, Seoul - South Korea, Taipei - Taiwan, Sydney  Australia and Shanghai  China
