Tasting Notes: Glenmorangie Grand Vintage Malt 1997 is bottled at 43% ABV.

Colour: Deep Ochre

Aroma: Astonishing, perfumed and fruity complexity. Floral notes of rose, jasmine and carnation intermingle with soft red fruits, mint toffee, pastry or cake mix and a sweet confectionery top note. With water, even more soft, floral top notes like roses and carnations emerge, with a very subtle spiciness like sweet chilli, clove and ginger.

Taste: A slightly tingly, gently spicy mouthfeel is followed by a symphony of sweet candy flavours, more soft red fruits, pineapple chunks and a taste reminiscent of pears and mandarin segments in fruit jelly. There are sweet ginger and chilli notes, gentle almond marzipan and vanilla toffee apple.

Finish: Sweet, rich, long and gently spicy.

Price: It will be available from RM3,787 via selected authorized wholesalers only.

Glenmorangie Grand Vintage Malt 1997

For more than 175 years, Glenmorangie’s whisky makers have been endlessly imaginative in their quest to dream up delicious single malts. When Dr Bill came to the Distillery in 1995, he had a vision to restyle the single malt, for even more wondrous results.

By 1997, when Glenmorangie Grand Vintage Malt 1997 was distilled, he had already magnified its fruity finesse by altering the moment that spirit is taken from the Distillery’s giraffe-high stills (their height allows more space for taste and aroma). And captivated by the flavours the art of wood finishing promised, he had started exploring how rare wine casks could shape Glenmorangie’s taste.

Fittingly, the spirit of 1997 would go on to inspire one of Dr Bill’s rarest experiments with wood. After ageing it for almost a decade in bourbon casks, he transferred a parcel into a handful of sought-after Château Montrose red wine casks, from the celebrated Saint-Estèphe appellation of Bordeaux. In a finish never attempted before or since at Glenmorangie, he set out to explore the casks’ distinctive soft, red fruit notes, imagining a whisky deliciously unlike any other.

Dr Bill said: “Glenmorangie Grand Vintage Malt 1997 is a dramatically different whisky, vibrant with red berries and tingling spice, melting marzipan and floral notes. Inspired by my dream of a more expressive single malt, it wonderfully embodies Glenmorangie’s kaleidoscopic style.”

The whiskies of the Bond House No. 1 vintage series are created from some of Glenmorangie’s most prized parcels of aged whisky, for particularly delicious results. The series is named after the largest of Glenmorangie’s 19th century Bonded Warehouses. For generations, Warehouse No. 1 was home to casks of maturing spirit until in 1990, it was transformed into a majestic new still house. Today, Bonded Warehouse No. 1 is the heart of the Distillery’s whisky creation.
