Exploring Local Art 3.0 @ The Gardens Mall

From 27 August to 21 September, The Gardens Mall welcomes Jun Ong, renowned light and installation artist, to shine a light on Malaysia’s heritage and arts scene. With six commissioned masterpieces inspired by sights and shapes from popular Malaysian culture, Jun Ong has managed to interpret them in technologically novel ways.

Exploring Local Art 3.0 @ The Gardens Mall

This exhibition collectively called “Imaginarium”, is the third series from The Gardens Mall's annual Exploring Local Art exhibition. Come admire Jun Ong’s innovative style of manipulating light and blending soundscapes into the installations for a more immersive experience.

At the South Palm on the Ground Floor, gentle and slow living is reimagined through Jun Ong’s “Kampung Cosmos”, “Wauscape”, and “Bukit Benang”. Using tie-dye textiles to form the wau and the mountain peaks of Gunung Brinchang, Gunung Kinabalu, and Batu Caves, the exhibits invite audiences to reimagine the aesthetic possibilities of Malaysia, where progress is no distant frontier but a remix of smells, stories and textures we already share. 

Over at the North Palm of the mall, the artist shakes things up with his “Pixel Galaxy”, featuring cellular kites with iconic Malaysian photos, turning sky and history into a living screen. Audiences will also get to experience layered soundscapes as it drifts from within the exhibit, from traditional instruments to atmospheric electronic hums. Further driving interactivity, visitors can also activate the exhibit’s AR filters and watch light fold into a parallel Malaysia where skies, streets and rice fields bloom far beyond the displays.

Hands-on Workshops and Experiences

Gain a deeper appreciation for what is traditional and hand-made. Witness a wau artisan work on his, and then make your own version in the exclusive workshop. All you have to do is spend a minimum of RM50 at any store in The Gardens Mall to register one participant. If you’re a Maybank cardmember, good news - any amount spent in The Gardens Mall qualifies you to register one participant!

These workshops are recommended for participants aged 18 years and above. Registration starts 30 minutes before the workshops begin. Slots available per session are limited and on a first-come, first-served basis.
