I was truly honored to attend the California Wines showcase, celebrating the historic 50th anniversary of the Judgment of Paris and its Golden State of Mind in Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur.

This year, the California Wine Institute (CWI) is delighted to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Judgment of Paris—the tasting that changed wine forever. To honor the 50-year legacy and to celebrate California wines, a series of events will take place in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Taipei, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and Macau.
Back in May 1976, conventional wisdom said the finest wines could only come from traditional European heritage. But when a handful of underdog California bottles outscored the absolute best of France in a blind tasting, everything changed. It proved that a bold vision and an open mind can craft world-class excellence anywhere.
“2026 is a landmark year for California wines for us,” says Christopher Beros, Director for Greater China & Southeast Asia. "The 50th anniversary of the Judgment of Paris isn't just about celebrating a historic victory—it's about showcasing how California has continued to lead the world in quality, innovation, and sustainability. The values and spirits that shaped the Judgment of Paris and define California wines continue to drive California winemakers today, from pioneering new winemaking techniques to being at the forefront of sustainability efforts.”
Fast forward to June 19, 2026, and I found myself raising a glass to that very legacy right here in Kuala Lumpur.
A Golden State of Mind at the Grand Hyatt KL
The celebratory event was hosted at the gorgeous Pool House @ Grand Hyatt KL, gathering around 60 fellow wine media and trade guests. It was an incredible afternoon filled with history, including a special screening of a short documentary that took us back to that fateful day in Paris.
The showcase perfectly captured California’s modern "Golden State of Mind"—pioneering, sustainable, and unapologetically bold—offering a curated tour across diverse wine-growing regions like the Sonoma Coast, Lodi, and Napa Valley. Wines in the showcase included other iconic grape varieties from California, such as Pinot Noir, and Zinfandel, California’s native grape.
My Top Pick: Chateau Montelena Napa Valley Chardonnay, 2023
The absolute highlight of the afternoon was getting to taste wines from the legendary estates that won it all 50 years ago: Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars (the Cabernet Sauvignon champion) and Chateau Montelena (the Chardonnay champion).
While the entire lineup was spectacular, my personal star of the show was the Chateau Montelena 2023 Chardonnay.
Tasting this bottle at an event honoring the Judgment of Paris felt almost poetic. It is easy to see why this producer shocked the French judges five decades ago. This vintage is a masterclass in balance:
The Profile: It bypasses the overly heavy, buttery oak style that people sometimes mistakenly associate with California.
The Taste: Instead, it bursts with crisp green apple, bright citrus zest, and a beautiful, clean minerality.
The Finish: It boasts incredible structure, vibrant acidity, and an elegant finish that leaves you wanting another sip.
It was the perfect reflection of how California continues to lead the world in quality while staying true to its innovative roots.
Kuala Lumpur was just one stop in this massive anniversary tour, and if this event was any indication, the next 50 years of California winemaking are going to be just as exciting as the last.
Cheers to the innovators, the risk-takers, and the beautiful bottles that keep pushing boundaries.
