Royal Culinary Craftsmanship & Star-Studded Highlights
The event kicked off with the highest of honors. Her Royal Highness Princess Ubolratana graciously presided over the opening ceremony, accompanied by Mr. Surasak Phancharoenworakul, Minister of Tourism and Sports, and Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, TAT Governor.
In a truly special moment, Her Royal Highness presented a live Thai cooking demonstration. The royal menu featured traditional delicacies showcasing intricate culinary craftsmanship: khao kriap pak mo (steamed rice-skin dumplings), saku sai kung (tapioca dumplings with shrimp filling), and khanom tua paep (mung bean and coconut rice dumplings). Using everyday Thai herbs and aromatics, the demonstration highlighted how deeply food is woven into the country's cultural identity.
Adding to the excitement, popular Thai actor and singer Third Lapat made a special appearance. Fans were treated to an exclusive meet-and-greet and an energetic mini-concert that brought the house down!
Floating Markets, Muay Thai, and Wellness in the Heart of KL
Central i-City was completely transformed into a Thai paradise. Visitors drifted through a bustling Thai Food Bazaar, enjoyed traditional cultural performances, and unwound with authentic Thai massages.
One of the major highlights was the Sawasdee Lounge, beautifully designed to mimic a traditional Thai floating market. Here, visitors could indulge in authentic snacks, desserts, and refreshments while participating in games and photo ops.
Families had plenty to do as well, with interactive arts-and-crafts workshops, dessert-making classes, and an incredibly popular Kids Muay Thai Workshop that kept the little ones active and entertained.
Food as a Bridge to Travel
Why focus so heavily on food? According to Thailand’s tourism leaders, gastronomy is the ultimate travel matchmaker.
"Thai cuisine is a national strength that connects culture, identity, and tourism," noted Mr. Surasak Phancharoenworakul. "The event supports Thailand’s tourism policy by using food as a bridge to inspire travel, generate economic value, and create wider benefits for destinations, communities, and businesses."
TAT Governor Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool echoed this sentiment, sharing that the festival connects food with wellness and creativity, "encouraging Malaysian travellers to rediscover Thailand through richer and more diverse experiences.”
The Malaysian Love Affair with Thailand
It’s no secret that Malaysians love Thailand. In fact, Malaysia is Thailand’s second-largest source market globally (right after China). The numbers speak for themselves: between January 1 and June 22, 2026, Thailand welcomed a staggering 2,000,211 Malaysian visitors!
Interestingly, over 90% of these visitors are independent travelers who love tailoring their own itineraries. With an average spending of over 21,000 Baht per person per trip, Thailand remains the ultimate go-to spot for quick weekend getaways, school holidays, and extended retreats.
Where are Malaysians Heading Next?
While Bangkok remains a favorite, TAT notes a massive rise in self-drive tourism to Southern Thailand. Armed with flexible schedules, Malaysian road-trippers are heading across the border to explore:
- Hat Yai & Betong for food and café hopping
- Satun, Phatthalung, & Nakhon Si Thammarat for local culture and untouched nature
- Trang, Krabi, Phang-nga, & Phuket for luxury resorts and coastal adventures
Seamless, Muslim-Friendly Travel
Traveling to Thailand has never been easier. Whether you prefer flying with various low-cost carriers, driving through one of the nine border checkpoints, or hopping on the special direct rail services between Kuala Lumpur and Hat Yai Junction, connectivity is seamless.
Furthermore, Thailand continues to champion Muslim-friendly travel. Malaysian Muslim travelers can explore with total peace of mind, thanks to an abundance of certified Halal food options, readily available mosques, excellent safety standards, and visitor-friendly communications throughout local communities.
A Grand Finale to a Global Tour
The Kuala Lumpur edition of the festival marked the grand finale of an impressive international showcase linked with Central Group. Prior to arriving in Malaysia, the cultural showcase made waves at iconic European destinations, including Selfridges in London, KaDeWe in Berlin, and de Bijenkorf in Amsterdam, as well as a sister showcase in Fukuoka, Japan.
If you missed the festival, don't worry—the flavors, warmth, and adventures of Thailand are just a short flight, drive, or train ride away.
