We were at Garage 51 on Saturday morning, catch up with some bloggers and also chats with friends before the masterclass started. The St Ali’s head of coffee Matt Perger started the masterclass, he caught my attention when he said “Coffee can shrink out breast size and the maximum is 3 cups per day” oppsss so I have to watch-out! Please take note no more than 3 cups per day if not boobies will become small, arghhh.

Then he continue to share his coffee expertise gave us a quick crash course on the process of coffee from the tree to the cup including sources, supply, processing, differences of roasting profiles and how it affects the taste and how to appreciate a cup of coffee.

Well, St Ali’s masterclasses are notoriously in high demand with workshops being sold out at St Ali’s previous pop up stint in Gangnam, Seoul. So this is an awesome opportunity for us to grasp some knowledge about coffee and also the coffee culture in Australia.

After all the theory now is the practical part, we had coffee sensory training. Learnt how to identify and communicate coffee flavor and aroma characteristics my smelling and tasting (slurping) testing or olfactory sense of aroma and flavor.

According to Matt, Columbia and Kenya coffee beans makes a better cup of coffee. Melbourne definitely has one of the strongest café cultures in the world. It is known not only for the quality of the roasting, brewing methods and baristas but for the café scene that continues to flourish with more quirky venues to feed the city’s coffee obsession.

  1. My previous job was a barista although i am not a fan off coffee at all haha. This looks like a great class glad you enjoyed it. I used to love doing coffee art with the foam.
I am not quite sure on his only 3 cups a day though, is that true?

  2. I loved this post and actually researched Matt's achievements afterwards. Coffee culture is huge in Europe too and I'd love to experience it in Melbourne. I've never been a barista but wouldn't mind learning the ropes on making a good coffee!

  3. Coffee shops are still booming and I wonder which product will be able to compete with them and take them off their market position.

Anyway, I really love the interiors of these coffee shops! Very urban/industrial feel.
