White Ribbon Run 2015: Break the Silence, End the Voilence Against Women

We were here to support and join the All Women's Action Society (AWAM) White Ribbon Run 2015 at Padang Merbok, Kuala Lumpur last Sunday. Well, I just recovered from my ankle injury, so 3 km walk is just right for me; doing it steadily and glad that there were friends around who accompany me along the way.

White Ribbon Run 2015: Break the Silence, End the Voilence Against Women

That morning over 1,000 participants join the 7km or 3km run to Break the Silence, End the Voilence Against Women. This run is not only for women, men and boys of all ages and walks of life came together at the White Ribbon Run to break a “Chain of Violence”, to symbolise the breaking down of the violence and varying burdens women have to deal with on a daily basis.

There were booths setup, sampling plus many fun activities going on after the run; such as flash mob dance and lucky draws. There was also a Lucky Draw, sponsored by Star Cruises, in which a 4 Days 3 Nights trip aboard the Superstar Gemini was the grand prize of the day.

This year, AWAM highlighted the theme “The Story of a Generation”. Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and Violence Against Women (VAW) are not solely women’s rights issues, they are human rights issues and we should all be involved in addressing it.

Men and boys made their pledges never to commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women and girls at White Ribbon Run 2015

At Padang Merbok, men and boys from all walks of life made their pledges never to commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women and girls. After the run, activities such as the breaking of a “Chain of Violence”, a flash mob, and the White Ribbon Campaign Quiz were carried out.

The White Ribbon Campaign is the world’s largest movement of men and boys working to end violence against women and girls, promote gender equality, healthy relationships and a new vision of masculinity. The movement began in 1989 following the tragic shooting incident resulting in the death of 14 female engineering students in Montreal, Canada. The White Ribbon Campaign seeks to change attitudes and behaviours that lead to and perpetuate violence against women by engaging boys and men to lead social change.

  4. Yellow, Red, Black, Pink, now also white ribbons for domestic violence -- a truly disturbing issue of humanity. These are people who supposedly love each other which makes it even worse.

  7. Women cause is the best way to voice-out what's inside of them according to their way of life. Most vital for this event makes them aware of violence still exists all throughout.
