Held at the hotel’s Main Lobby Porte Cochère, the celebration drew more than 200 guests who gathered to witness a vibrant programme steeped in tradition. The afternoon commenced with a commanding 24-drum performance by the University of Malaya troops. Their synchronised rhythms set an auspicious tone, filling the space with energy and anticipation.

The momentum continued with an impressive lion dance performance by the award-winning Persatuan Tarian Naga dan Singa Callifo Nansheng. Featuring Southern lions, the troupe delivered a skilful and dynamic display marked by precise footwork and athletic choreography. Embodying prosperity, strength and good fortune, the performance mesmerised guests and set a vibrant tone for the year ahead.

A highlight of the celebration was the much-anticipated Yee Sang tossing ceremony, attended by over 70 invited distinguished guests alongside the hotel’s management team. At the heart of the ritual was an extraordinary 48-foot-long Yee Sang, intricately designed with auspicious Chinese characters and a striking galloping horse motif symbolising vitality and forward momentum. Expertly crafted by Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur’s culinary team, it stood as a remarkable centrepiece representing abundance and good fortune.

Addressing the gathering, the General Manager shared, “The Year of the Galloping Horse represents energy, strength and forward momentum. As we toss the Yee Sang in celebration of unity and abundance, we embrace the opportunity to pioneer new horizons, set new benchmarks, and create meaningful moments together in the months ahead.”

Following the spirited ceremony, the guzheng performance echoed through the lobby, its refined melodies bringing a graceful and culturally resonant close to the celebration. Guests were also invited to participate in a Chinese paper-cutting activity by Malaysian Paper-cutting artist Eten Teo, celebrating a centuries-old folk art traditionally used to adorn homes with symbols of happiness and prosperity. The intricate handcrafted designs offered a meaningful cultural experience and a thoughtful keepsake from the day.

Through this thoughtfully curated celebration, Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur reaffirmed its commitment to honouring Chinese art, culture and heritage while delivering refined and memorable experiences. The event served as a testament to Shangri-La’s Asian hospitality, where timeless traditions are celebrated with warmth and elegance.

Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur invites guests to continue the festivities with its special Chinese New Year offerings at Shang Palace and Lemon Garden, ensuring that the joy and prosperity of the season extend well beyond the first day until 3 March 2026.
