When it comes to weddings, fewer parts are more exciting than choosing the wedding cake. Do you want to go for classic white? Or do you want something more modern? The design of the cake is one thing, but there are other parts of ordering a cake for your wedding that you may need to think about before the big day.

Transport
Nobody thinks about this until they see the final cake: how are you going to relocate it to the reception?
For wedding cakes that are made up of three smaller cakes on pillars, this is easy, as you simply transport them as small cakes and put them together at the reception. For cakes that are part of the wedding catering, there is also very little to be worried about, as the cake will be assembled by the catering team. With cakes that are grand, large, or have a lot of additional pieces, it is advised to transport them in a large van, surrounded by a custom-fitted cake drum and air conditioning if possible. If you are ordering the cake from bakers, they will likely offer this, but if it is a homemade cake, then be careful and get some extra hands to help.
Temperature!
The internet is full of horror stories relating to wedding cakes melting due to the venue being hot, or the cake being placed in direct sunlight outside. Not great and, in case you were wondering, this is not the fault of the baker or decorator! You will need to check the temperature at the venue and, if your wedding is taking place on a hot day, make sure there is air conditioning, or that the cake is placed somewhere cool. Do not put it in direct sunlight, even if it looks pretty, as you may end up with a cake puddle!
Allergies
A key part of the wedding cake is that everyone who attends has a slice. This can be tricky, especially if you have vegan guests, those who have lactose intolerance, or gluten allergies, but looking at your guest list will help you to determine this. If you can, opt for wedding cake cupcakes if there are lots of allergies or intolerances among those attending, and talk to the baker about making different cupcakes for different guests. This will help everyone to get a piece of the cake and will also look pretty, with a modern theme thrown in. Or, if you want a three-tiered cake, why not have one layer with all of the regular cake ingredients, one layer for vegan and gluten-free, with the third layer being lactose-free?
Guest List
How many people are going to be attending your wedding? You will want a cake that can feed more people than are on the guest list, as having a cake that is too small will likely not go down well with your guests. The best part is that any cake that is left at the end of the reception can be given to guests in gift bags to take home.
Taste Tests
You will also want to undertake taste tests of any baker who is offering to bake your wedding cake. These are usually free (though you should check) and will allow you to sample which cake type and flavor is your favorite, so you find the perfect wedding cake.
