At Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur, this tradition becomes something even more meaningful in 2025, as the hotel celebrates its 40th anniversary with a remarkable tribute to flavour, craft and heritage.

From 6 May to 30 June 2025, guests are invited to experience an elegant Afternoon Tea at the Lobby Loungecurated in collaboration with the prestigious London Tea Exchange. This exclusive partnership, marking the Exchange’s first in Southeast Asia brings together the best of two worlds: exceptional hospitality and a journey through 40 of the world’s finest teas.

A CURATED CELEBRATION OF TASTE

The Afternoon Tea is the result of thoughtful curation by Executive Chef Scott Brands whose creativity and precision bring the experience to life. Drawing inspiration from Shangri-La’s culinary roots and Malaysia’s rich tea culture, his menu weaves together delicate flavours and aromatic infusions.

“In curating this afternoon tea, we wanted to go beyond simply serving beautiful food, each bite to tell a story. Infusing handpicked teas into the menu allowed us to add depth and subtle flavour. It’s a celebration of craftsmanship, tradition, and creativity, all in honour of the hotel’s 40th anniversary,” shared Scott Brand, Executive Chef of Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur.

The journey begins with savoury delights: Rillettes of Fresh and Smoked Salmon Sandwich subtly lifted by the smoky depth of Lapsang Souchong; a Truffle Egg Salad and Trout Caviar éclair made even more indulgent by Pistachio and Truffle Tea, adding a mellow nuttiness and lasting richness, and a Caramelised Onion Mini Quiche with Charcoal Goat’s Cheese, perfectly balancing tang and earthy warmth.

The sweets are an elegant journey of flavour: the Lavender Pear with Spiced Honeycomb, infused with Lavender Tea, is a fragrant and soothing delight, while the Bittersweet Chocolate Slice with Peach and Apricot Tea offers a balanced contrast of deep cocoa and fruity finish.

Of course, no afternoon tea is complete without scones. Classic Sultana and Vanilla Scones, the latter infused with Vanilla Supremo Tea, are served warm with clotted cream, raspberry jam and whipped butter, a tender nod to timeless tradition with a fragrant twist.

The Afternoon Tea set is priced at RM220 nett for two persons and is available daily from 6 to 31 May 2025 at the Lobby Lounge. For those who wish to enjoy it in the comfort of their own home, the Premium 40th Anniversary Afternoon Tea Takeaway Set is available for takeaway or delivery at RM188 per set.

A TOAST TO TEA TRADITIONS AND GLOBAL HERITAGE

At the heart of this commemorative afternoon tea lies a curated journey through 40 exceptional teas, each selected in collaboration with the London Tea Exchange to honour Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur’s 40th anniversary.

These teas are more than just beverages, they are windows into cultures, histories, and traditions that span the globe.

Among the highlights is Premium Rosebuds, a delicate infusion of authentic Iranian baby rose buds, plucked at their peak and dried gently to preserve their floral aroma and naturally sweet taste. From the tropics comes Premium Bora Bora, a lively blend of strawberries and tropical papaya, rounded with a medley of vibrant fruits.

Its sweet and tangy flavour is as refreshing hot as it is chilled. The Peach and Apricot blend marries a full-bodied China-Ceylon tea base with lush stone fruits, accented by red berries and a hint of creamy vanilla. It’s the tea equivalent of summer in a glass—rich, fragrant and inviting.

For those drawn to ancient rituals, Emperor’s Palace Tea offers a rare glimpse into imperial China. Once reserved exclusively for royalty, this green tea from the Fujian highlands features light honeyed notes—an expression of understated elegance. Honouring Japanese refinement, Premium Sencha Sakura enchants with its floral beauty and soft cherry notes. Embellished with rose petals, it evokes the fleeting grace of springtime blossoms in every pour.

Premium Milk Oolong, crafted entirely by hand, is steamed with milk water to release its signature creamy, fruity complexity. A velvety tea, it pairs beautifully with the afternoon’s scones and sweets, elevating each bite with its soft richness. Pistachio and Truffle is a standout blend developed over two years to perfect its luxurious balance.

Studded with real pistachios and chocolate truffle pieces, it’s a tea of indulgence. Rounding out this highlighted ensemble is Premium Sea of Blossoms, a rare infusion laced with blossoms, raspberry, rhubarb, and cherry. The result is a calming, beautifully aromatic tea.
