Make the Shelves Store all Your Knick Knacks with Style

Shelves are mostly associated with storing or displaying the household stuff. The shelves can be hidden in the cupboard or they can be built openly on the walls to add style. Designing the shelves and positioning them may be the difficult job but arranging your knickknacks on those shelves is even more difficult. These open shelves are mostly used to keep the books for easy access and also to display your love for reading! You can place many other décor and daily use things on these shelves to grab the attention of your guests or because you have no place left elsewhere. Whatever may be your idea behind placing things on the shelves, you may do it strategically so as to make all them be the part of décor.

Know what you want
Don’t just start dumping things on the shelf as and when you get them. Take a rough idea of what you would be placing on the shelf beforehand. Categorize everything you would be putting on the shelf in different groups like books, art pieces, clocks, crockery, and so on. This will give you a clear picture about what to keep and what to discard.

See if you can really place multiple objects from same group
This is an important thing to notice. You can have multiple objects from same group but not always. For e.g. Multiple books from the group of book can be displayed but multiple clocks from the group of clock cannot be displayed. Hence, keep the extra items for other room or gifting if you cannot have them all on one shelf.
Decide the color scheme
It is difficult to match the color scheme of the room or stick to couple of colors as there are many things that will go on each shelf. You cannot decide the color scheme of the stuff you would put their but it is possible to add some specific color props and art pieces to make it uniform. Try to place this color prop on each shelf to get the uniformity throughout.

No need to establish symmetry
You cannot establish symmetry on the shelves. Don’t ever try to mirror the things that you place on the shelf as it will take away the charm. Try to be bit creative. Even while placing the books, break the symmetry by using different arrangements like horizontal, vertical, and slanting. The symmetry can also be broken by keeping some empty space in between or placing some art piece. The shelves can be designed in different heights and lengths to avoid symmetry.

Caution - Open shelves are not for storage
Though these shelves will accommodate everything you want to keep, refrain yourself from messing them up. These shelves can be doubled up as storage through some intelligent arrangements but don’t forget they are meant for display. Keep some empty space for art pieces and antiques that you might have procured with great difficulty.

Hidden storage is the best way to hide your knickknacks but with little creativity and sense of space, you can convert the open shelves into storage cum display racks. Bring out the artist in you and paint your shelves with the knickknacks to grab attention of your guests.
