How to Clean Your Rugs Like a Pro

Everyone wants their house to be clean and inviting. One of the most inviting things a house could have is a rug. However, having one and maintaining and cleaning them can be challenging.

Vacuuming and spot cleaning may be helpful solutions to keep your rug clean, but if you want them in their best condition, you need to learn how to clean them properly.

With the proper tools and procedures, your rug can look new and retain longevity. There are also different ways to clean them. Here are a few simple ones to consider:

Vacuum

Vacuuming can prolong your rug’s life in addition to being cleaned of dirt, dust, and other material that could become embedded in its fibers. To clean your rug with a vacuum, go over it multiple times and on both sides if possible. Doing this will help lift the dirt, debris, and pet hair deep within the rug's pile.

For best results, use a vacuum cleaner that comes with an upholstery attachment with strong suction power. Avoid vacuuming your entire rug using the beater bar, which can damage the rug fibers.

Use a Shampoo

This method can be used on washable rugs that are made of synthetic materials and need deep cleaning every once in a while. Start by vacuuming both sides of the rug, then apply a small amount of carpet shampoo. Use a sponge or rag to rub the soap into the fabric, but make sure not to scrub too hard.

Once the entire rug is covered with shampoo, use a bucket of warm water and a brush to work the soap into the fibers. Then rinse it off with clean water until there's no more soap residue left on the rug. If you have an old, frayed rug that needs extra cleaning, let it soak in a bucket with soap and water for an hour or two before rinsing.

The type of shampoo you can use depends on the rug material. For example, wool rugs should be washed using a special mild detergent. Always read the label on your shampoo to make sure it's compatible with the rug material.

Use a Rug Rake

After shampooing your rug, use a rug rake to ensure it looks its best. It's a specific brush that helps lift dirt and debris out of the fabric, giving you perfect-looking rugs every time.

Begin by brushing the rake over the entire surface of your rug in firm but gentle motions. You should see all the dirt, dust, and debris come out as you go. It can also help fluff the fibers of your rug, making them look plush and inviting.

Deodorize Rugs

You can make a simple rug deodorizer at home using baking soda and essential oils. Mix equal parts of each ingredient in a bowl, then sprinkle the mixture over your rugs. Let it sit before vacuuming up the excess powder.

After that, mix a few drops of your favorite essential oil with water and spray them directly onto your rugs. Your rugs will smell clean and fresh since the essential oils will assist in eliminating any scents that may still be there.

Steam Clean

For a deeper clean, you can also use steam on your rugs. Any bacteria or dust mites that may be present in the rug's fibers can be eliminated using this technique.

Start by filling a steam cleaner with hot water and rug shampoo. Vacuum any surface dirt before going over the entire rug with the steam cleaner. Be sure to go over each area multiple times for maximum absorption, and keep an eye out for any areas that need extra attention.

When you're finished steam cleaning your rugs, let them air-dry before putting them back in place.

Remove the Stains Effectively

The easiest way to remove stains is to use a specialized rug stain remover. Start by blotting the stained area with an absorbent cloth or paper towel. Blot from outside the stain towards the center to prevent it from spreading further.

Next, apply your rug stain remover directly on top of the stained area and let it sit. Finally, blot the area one last time to help lift the stain. If the stain doesn't ultimately come out, repeat these steps until it does.

Use Rug Sealant

Once your rugs look their best, it's essential to protect them with a sealant. This will help shield the fibers from dirt and debris as well as prevent spills and stains from soaking right into the fabric. Start by applying a thin layer of sealant onto the rug with a brush or roller. Make sure to evenly cover all parts of the rug and let it dry for at least after application.

Final Words

Aside from fancy furniture, awesome centerpieces, and incredible lighting, rugs are a must for a home that wants to look great. As with everything, rugs also age with time. They get dirty and old and may not look as good as when you bought it. But with the tips above, you can easily transform your frayed, dirty rugs to look as good as new.
