What a great way to kick start my weekend with the Coffee
Masterclass at Garage 51 by St Ali and Tourism Victoria, Melbourne. Psst… plus the
masterclass is conducted by the good looking Matt Perger, World Champion
Barista 2013.
We were at Garage 51 on Saturday morning, catch up with some
bloggers and also chats with friends before the masterclass started. The St
Ali’s head of coffee Matt Perger started the masterclass, he caught my attention
when he said “Coffee can shrink out breast size and the maximum is 3 cups per
day” oppsss so I have to watch-out! Please take note no more than 3 cups per
day if not boobies will become small, arghhh.
Then he continue to share his coffee expertise gave us a quick
crash course on the process of coffee from the tree to the cup including sources,
supply, processing, differences of roasting profiles and how it affects the
taste and how to appreciate a cup of coffee.
Well, St Ali’s masterclasses are notoriously in high demand with
workshops being sold out at St Ali’s previous pop up stint in Gangnam, Seoul.
So this is an awesome opportunity for us to grasp some knowledge about coffee
and also the coffee culture in Australia.
After all the theory now is the practical part, we had coffee
sensory training. Learnt how to identify and communicate coffee flavor and
aroma characteristics my smelling and tasting (slurping) testing or olfactory
sense of aroma and flavor.
According to Matt, Columbia and Kenya coffee beans makes a better cup
of coffee. Melbourne definitely has one of the strongest café cultures in the
world. It is known not only for the quality of the roasting, brewing methods
and baristas but for the café scene that continues to flourish with more quirky
venues to feed the city’s coffee obsession.
For those who plan to experience the coffee culture in Melbourne,
Australia Matt did suggest a few café with good coffee and food such as St Ali Café
South Melbourne; Auction Rooms Café in North Melbourne and The Palette Café in
Richmond.

My previous job was a barista although i am not a fan off coffee at all haha. This looks like a great class glad you enjoyed it. I used to love doing coffee art with the foam.
ReplyDeleteI am not quite sure on his only 3 cups a day though, is that true?
I loved this post and actually researched Matt's achievements afterwards. Coffee culture is huge in Europe too and I'd love to experience it in Melbourne. I've never been a barista but wouldn't mind learning the ropes on making a good coffee!

Coffee shops are still booming and I wonder which product will be able to compete with them and take them off their market position.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I really love the interiors of these coffee shops! Very urban/industrial feel.
That sounds like a great event. I love coffee and I would have loved to try those tempting lattes.
ReplyDeleteI do not drink coffee so this is all Greek to me. I have to admit though that the smell of coffee is very homey and comfortable.
ReplyDeleteJust love the name of the place, "GARAGE". Very rugged but when you see it, the place is cool and have a good ambiance. SO curious to taste their coffee!
ReplyDeleteYou got me at the coffee shrinking boobs part! Haha... I'm glad I don't drink coffee though!
ReplyDeleteMy oh my! why is it that up to now..with all those nice reviews I've read about coffee. Still I am not into it. Nice photos.
ReplyDeleteSaw you share this on instagram few days ago. And also other blogger. Envy a lot you can join this event.
ReplyDeleteI managed multiple restaurants with espresso coffee in which the company trained me as barista. I've learned these things and truly appreciate the coffee art before serving. Milk froothing is really fun.
ReplyDeleteThe part where coffee can decrease breast size can be a good ice breaker. I love coffee and would love to see events like this live.
ReplyDeleteUgh! I wish I could attend something like this in the future! Coffee is such a wonderful thing and it must be so awesome to learn how to brew yourself! :D
ReplyDeleteThis is a wonderful experience to be part of! Did not know that there is a huge coffee culture in Melbourne. But I guess everywhere in the world, there's plenty of coffee lovers and tons of cafes to cater to them.
ReplyDeleteOMG, that is one good reason to reduce my coffee intake T.T
ReplyDeleteI just love coffee, it's why I have a gold card to Starbucks. I would love to attend something like this.
ReplyDeleteCoffee can shrink out breast size?!? Oh dear. Why oh why. I love coffee!
