Search for Herbs and Ulam at Chow Kit Wet Market


I went to Chow Kit wet market sorang-sorang (alone) after my short meeting at KLCC. It was sort of spontaneous or last minute decision to go there. If I know that I am going to Chow Kit, I would have wear blouse and pants. Anyway, everything was fine and I got what I want so Yahoo!




Remember I blogged about House Warming & Cooking Challenge for my bestie new house warming gathering earlier this week. Ok, then someone suggested that I cook NASI ULAM NYONYA on that day at her house and I am so smart to say yes. When I google the recipe, what??? Alamak! There are so many types of herbs and daun-daun (leaves) that I need in order to make this nasi ulam nyonya. I asked around my friends where can I buy all these herbs; some suggested Chow Kit Wet Market, Taman Tun Wet Market, Pasar Borong Selayang and etc… At first, I went to Taman Tun Wet Market which is the most convenient for me but some of the herbs are not available there. Sigh…

Then I think the next hunting destination will Chow Kit Wet Market. These are the ingredients that I am hunting, Wild Betel Leaves (Daun Kaduk), Torch Ginger Flower (Bunga Kantan), Polygonum Leaves (Daun Kesom), Asiatica Pennywort Leaves (Daun Pegaga), Basil Leaves (Daun Selasih), Kaffir Lime Leaves (Daun Limau Purut), Lemongrass (Serai), Mint Leaves (Daun Pudina), Fresh Turmeric (Kunyit) and Shallot (Bawang Merah).




Okay lets take a walk in Chow Kit wet market, how many of you have been to Chow Kit Market??? Some people said its dangerous or blah blah blah… but I think everywhere go also dangerous la even at home. As long as we be cautious and keep low profile should be alright, anyway some of the makcik (aunty) at the wet market are very friendly.

I met some friendly people who helped me to locate the herbs stalls and take picture for me. I chatted with this Akak explained to me some herbs that the local and Indonesian usually buy over here.

After I got all my stuff it’s already 3pm, I am feeling a bit hungry and thirsty. So I walk over to Kampung Baru (nearby only) Restoran Garuda for some Minang Food and Sate Padang and Ais Teler. Oppsss!!! no Ais Teler picture here because I was too thirsty and finished the whole bowl then only realize I have not take picture aisk...

and Sate Padang with nasi himpit 



It was a good and fun experience for me at the Chow Kit wet market. The weather was really hot, I sweat a lot & now look a bit tanned. In Chow Kit there are so many things to buy that you won’t find in the supermarket. Perhaps we should plan a day to Chow Kit again for some authentic Malay and Indonesian (Minang and Padang) Food. 



These are the herbs for my Nasi Ulam Nyonya and vegetable that I need for my dinner tonite. I am using Jasmine Royal Siam fragrance rice for the nasi. My upcoming cooking post is coming soon…  sabar ya :)

  3. In Pantai Timur maybe we called it Nasi Kerabu..anyway, it's a good entry and a nice journey..

  4. Hi kelly, never again go chowkit, many ULAM as well over there. btw that Kadok leaves? so SEDAP Nasi Ulam to include in. one of my favorites.
