Addiction is a disease with a lot of harmful characteristics and behaviors. A person who is addicted will find it extremely difficult to control the use of the substance. Even though they are fully aware of the negative side of the substance, they cannot stop themselves from consuming the substance or engaging in the behavior.

If you feel that your loved one is addicted or is suffering from substance use disorder, it is best to take them to an inpatient drug rehab like Serenity Oaks Wellness Center, which provides medical and psychotherapeutic care to treat the distractive habit pattern, thus helping the individual to recover from the addiction and reducing the possibility for relapse.

Before guiding someone to rehab, you need to recognize and understand the signs of addiction. Therefore it is very necessary to understand the symptoms and signs of addiction. We also need to remember that one cannot generalize the signs and symptoms of addiction. It will vary based on their lifestyle, family background, and circumstances.

1. Physical signs of addiction

Continuously consuming a substance will take a toll on your body and can impact your bodily function.  Here are some of the physical symptoms of addiction.

A. Withdrawal symptoms

The physical signs can be very evident when the individual’s intake level of the substance drops below a certain level. Based on the amount, substance, and the time interval the person used the substance, the severity and signs may vary. The common signs include constipation, trembling, persistent itching, cravings, and at times may show destructive behaviors like violence and self-harm.

B. Change in appetite

Continuous use of the substance may change the appetite of an individual.

C. Diseases caused by the consumption of a substance

Long-term use of substances like Tabaco and alcohol can cause lung disease and liver problems. The use of some drugs may cause problems in arteries and veins.

D. Insomnia

The use of illegal drugs and some stimulants can disrupt your sleep pattern.

E. Change in appearance

A person consuming the substance may look tired, may have enlarged or small pupils, unkempt look, may lose or gain weight, and may have different body order.

2. Behavioral signs of addiction

For a person suffering from addiction, their priorities and feeling may change. These substances can turn them into someone unrecognizable. Their behavior may completely change considering their normal behavior. You need to look out if they show some of these behavioral changes.

A. Loss of interest

When a person is overly dependent on a substance, it will take over their mind, resulting in setting new priorities. They may lose interest in some hobbies or activities in which they were interested earlier. For instance, a person who is addicted to tobacco may lose interest in sports and may not engage in any physical activities.

B. Unable to manage their emotions

When a person consumes alcohol or some illicit substances, they may lose their ability to control their emotions. They may suddenly become upset, irritated, angry, or sad. They may not be able to think rationally and will behave based on their emotions. A usually calm person may become hyper and may fall into depression.

C. Sets boundaries and more private behavior

A person who is consuming a substance usually exhibits private behavior. Fearing judgment, and social stigma, they may choose to spend their time in their rooms and may even develop paranoia. They will become more secretive and will shut themselves from people with whom they were earlier comfortable. They may also get irritated when someone tries to make conversation with them.

D. Defensive

They will try to escape or show hostility when asked about their life and other uncomfortable questions. They will try to hide their addiction and hence will try to skip all the conversation. While talking, they may become very aggressive, argue, or try to divert the talk.
