As you know Dongzhi (冬至) or Winter Solstice is coming soon, and this festival is one of the most important celebration for the Chinese. During Winter Solstice, the must-have dish is Tang Yuen or Glutinous Rice Balls because it symbolizes family togetherness and believe everything will sailed smoothly in the coming new year.

What inspired me to create this ‘East Meets West’ dessert by using California Raisins as Tang Yuen filling is that California Raisins has many health benefits and it's sweet naturally. Therefore, this makes Tang Yuen tastes sweet for the filling and every bite is burst with natural goodness.

California Raisins are naturally sweet without any added sugar, source of fiber, nutrients, and they can also be incorporated in any dishes and desserts. As you can see how I added California Raisins as the filling in my Tang Yuen, not only it taste sweet on the inside but also elevate the whole presentation of the dish. Raisins are ideal for any occasion, as they are ready-to-eat, tasty and healthy.

California Raisins Tang Yuen Recipe

Ingredients

1 cup of California Raisins

1 medium bowl of glutinous flour

Green and Pink food coloring

Sugar

Water

Methods

1. Mix the glutinous flour and add in water little by little, knead until dough does not stick to your hand or mixing bowl.

2. Separate the dough into 3 portions, the plain dough, the remaining 2 doughs add in 1 or 2 drops of food coloring to make the pink and green dough.

3. Pinch the dough into small and medium balls and roll them in between your palms into round balls. Set aside on a flat surface with a bit of flour on the surface to avoid the balls stick on the surface.

4. Take a piece of medium dough ball and flatten. Then place the California Raisins in the middle. Wrap the dough around the filling and roll into a smooth ball. Repeat the same with the rest of the medium balls. And we have made glutinous rice balls with California Raisins.

5. To cook the glutinous rice balls, first boil a pot of water. Then add in the glutinous rice balls. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking. Cook for 5 minutes or until the glutinous rice balls float onto the surface of the water.

6. Sieve out all the cooked glutinous rice balls and place them into a bowl of cold water for about 1 minute. This will make the rice balls more chewy.

7. Then boil water, add sugar to make syrup, and then place glutinous rice balls into syrup. It's ready to be served.

  7. To be honest, I've never tried tang yuen before. But lately I've seen several of my friends making them (because everybody has become chefs this year), so I think I might actually try making them too. Thanks for the recipe!
