Skin Type

For a skincare newbie, it is very essential to know your skin type. There are three common types of skin— Dry, oily, and normal or a combination.

Dry skin type is when the skin can crack, peel, get itchy, and easily get inflamed and irritated. These are usually caused by genes, hormonal changes, and weather.

Oily skin type is when you have enlarged pores, thick complexion, and lots of visible blackheads and pimples. This can also change because of the weather and time of the year. Sometimes, it gets worse when someone hits puberty, experiences stress, or if the weather is too humid.

Normal or combination skin type is when the skin can be normal and dry in some areas and oily in others, commonly on the T-zone (nose, forehead, and chin). This skin type tends to look shiny, and the pores are larger and more open.

Lifestyle

When jumping into skincare for the first time, consider asking yourself these questions: Are you willing to commit to a broad and extensive routine? Are you exposed to the sun on a daily basis? What are the skincare concerns that make you want to jump into a routine? Do you have health concerns or needs? What are your expectations? It may sound too much; however, these are important factors to consider, especially in getting the right products.

Budget

As much as we want to improve our skin, we also want it to be budget-friendly. Consider products that are effectively based on your skin type and be willing to spend within the desired price range. There are various alternatives of just one product considering how vast the skincare industry is nowadays. If you do the right amount of research, picking out the right ones will come easy.

After deliberating all these factors, it is best to know the basics of skin care products. The list of things to first consider are the following:

Cleanser. This is the foundation of your skincare routine. If you are fond of makeup, it is very important to remove it after a long day. Whether from work or school, we are all exposed to all kinds of bacteria, pollutants, and dirt. No matter how simple or extensive the skincare routine, it will always start with a cleanser. Cream-based cleansers are great for dry skin while gel or foamy cleansers are better for oily skin types. Selecting a cleanser with a balanced pH will help maintain the skin’s natural balance.

Body Scrub. Exfoliation is good for the skin because it removes dead skin cells. This helps the skin look and feel smoother. Scrubbing the skin twice or thrice a week reduces the appearance of dark spots.
It also minimizes large pores and allows moisturizer to work better.

Toner. This removes the deep-seated dirt that cleansers aren’t able to reach. Some toners are humectants, which means they help to bind moisture to the skin. Gentle and soothing toners are most helpful and necessary for people with oily or acne-prone skin types. A calming blend of aloe and witch hazel are good options for dry to combination skin types since it avoids any harsh or drying additives, which keeps the skin refreshed and hydrated.

Moisturizer. It is important to moisturize the skin as this nourishes and hydrates it, and seals in all the products. For dry skin types, oil-based moisturizers or petrolatum-based products are best in restoring moisture in the skin. For oily skin types, you must not take this step for granted! Choose a suitable and light moisturizer that can remove oil and dry out the skin. For normal to combination skin type, in order to maintain the balance of moisture of the skin, it is better to use a water-based, light, and non-greasy moisturizer.

These are just the basics, and laying out the foundation of any skincare routine is essential. Once started, it is also necessary to keep at it. Results don’t just happen overnight. Add a thing or two to these steps depending on the needs and concerns of the skin at the time. It is important to do some personal research and try out samples to really map out what works for you.

  1. For me, cleansing is the most important ritual, next to brushing my teeth - I may be dead tired in the evening, but I will not skip those.
