Suburban Secrets: Exploring the Hidden Gems of Brisbane

Here are some top spots that you may have never heard of hidden in the suburbs of one of the most popular cities in Australia. These hidden gems may not remain hidden for much longer so make sure you get yourself there as quickly as possible and make travelling across the city a real breeze with city bikes, public transport or by hiring a Taxi Brisbane to maximise your time exploring. So, here are a number of hidden gems in Brisbane for you to visit.

Madders Brother Patissiere

Brothers Luke and Paul describe their products as edible artistry and that’s exactly what they are. The creative designs make the goodies look too good to eat but they truly taste as good as they look. The trendy patisserie is located in Jamboree Heights and boasts a luxurious interior for you to enjoy the sweet treats in.

Both brothers are experts in their fields and create delicate pastries, jellies, beautiful flowers and stunning chocolate decorations for you to indulge in. No treat would be complete without a rich 100% Colombian Calima coffee to perfectly compliment it- this place sure has the wow factor.

Olley’s Coffee in the Rainforest

After a stroll in the rainforest stop off at Olley’s for a well deserved rest and some food. This mountain top cafe has the perfect backdrop to enjoy and asian inspired afternoon tea or lunch on the wooden deck nestled in the rainforest’s dense foliage. You’ll notice the extensive art work which was completed by the late Margaret Olley who painted her famous Sydney Harbour Bridge piece just the day before she died in 2011.

This along with the natural beauty of the forest and it’s wildlife make the most laid back hidden gem in Brisbane. If you’re stopping by here don’t forget to sample Ken Olley’s pure organic honey, you may even want to buy some to take with you- it’s that good.

Tree Top Walk

Looking for something a little bit different to do? Just 90 minutes outside of Brisbane is The Tree Top Walk in Lamington National Park and it’is probably for you. This 180 metre long trail consists of nine suspension bridges that float a mere 15 metres above the ground.

There is an option to climb through the canopy of the rainforest and ascend another 15 metres to one of the observation decks to get the best possible view of the naturally beautiful National Park. The innovative design of the trail allows you to observe life in the canopy at close range like never before.

Coochiemudlo Island

Coochiemudlo Island is one of the of the lesser frequented islands off the Brisbane coast which means it’s an ideal spot to relax. It has clear, calm water and soft sandy beaches to explore and is only a short ferry ride away from Victoria Point Jetty. If you have a little more energy you can hire a bike or a boat to explore further and find a secluded piece of the island for yourself.

If exploring is not for you, why not turn your hand to fishing. There’s an array of different species that inhabit the surrounding waters including Whiting, Flathead, Bream and Cod for you to catch. Whatever you choose to do whilst here this hidden gem is well worth a visit.

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary

This hidden gem is a treat for both tourists and locals alike. This sanctuary sits within 15 hectares of bushland right next to the Brisbane river and is now the largest in the world, housing over 130 koalas. Not only will you see cuddly koalas during your visit but kangaroos, cassowary, dingos and wombats live here too.

There’s lots to do once you’re here including hand feeding the kangaroos and having your picture taken with the koalas. Whilst you’re here why not catch one of the regular wildlife shows you’ll be able to see lorikeet feeding time and birds of prey in action. All proceeds made from visitors go towards the renovation of the sanctuary, planting eucalyptus trees and caring for the animals- so do your good deed for the day.

With so many hidden gems in suburban Brisbane, why waste any time getting from a to b when you could be spending more time exploring the heart of the city.
