Maximize Comfort on Hot & Hazy Days

This week I am not feeling well, I got a dry throat, cough, and fever. My body was aching and there are some symptoms of dengue so I went to Pantai Hospital to do a blood test just in case and be safe. Lucky it's not dengue, just fever, and cough. The weather is so hot and humid so try to stay away from fried food and drink more water. Mount Sinabung, Indonesia which erupted recently, the scorching heat, absence of rain, and particularly slow winds have come together to present us with hot, hazy, and extremely uncomfortable weather. Here are some steps and tips that you can do to Maximize Comfort on Hot & Hazy Days.

Haze, an atmospheric condition where dust, smoke, and other dry particles obscure visibility, has forced Malaysians to retreat indoors yet again putting the air conditioners at homes and in the offices to a very heavy use.

Since it looks like the issue of haze is going to be the recurring bane of our lives for the foreseeable future, we should all look into long-term solutions to equip ourselves adequately in order to deal with it successfully in all areas of our lives.

To make sure that we are protected from haze while indoors, we need to keep a couple of things in mind:
  • Try to close all windows and doors that may allow the outside air in, and turn on your air-conditioner.
  • Keep air conditioner in a tip-top working condition. Clean and service it if you haven’t done so recently. Fine particles can enter an air-conditioned building through the fresh air intake and by infiltration through openings and gaps and they need to be cleaned out. If you find yourself stuck with an inefficient and outdated AC unit, you should consider getting a PTAC as a replacement. Find out how PTAC units can help keep your home cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter months at this link.
  • If you can, use an air purifier to further reduce the number of particles indoors but be sure to choose an air purifier that is adequate for the size of your living space.
Alternatively, you could consider getting a value for money air conditioner that not only keeps your home cool in hot weather but also, effectively traps dust and harmful micro-pollutants from being released into your indoor space. While you might not be able to escape the energy cost involved in running an air conditioner, you can certainly minimize it by using it in a more environmental-friendly way.
