Picnic Lunch at Samalona Island, Makasar

After exploring the uninhabited Kodingareng Keke Island we took a boat ride to the nearby Samalona Island, Makassar for our picnic lunch. The boat ride took us about 30 minutes. Indeed it is another small and peaceful island with some local chalets, shops and warungs around the island. There is a lighthouse on this island that is used as a sign of land boundary for big ships.

When we arrived in Samalona Island the food is ready to be served. These are the local Makassar home cooked food. We also had fresh coconut juice to quench our thirst and cool down our body after several hours sunbathing in Kodingareng Keke Island.

Well the sambal belimbing is very appetizing and additive when eat together with bbq fish and white rice. Yes its spicy with a bit of tanginess from the small star fruits (belimbing).

My picks ~ cumi-cumi, bbq prawns, sambal belimbing and perkedel jagung

Another specialty is the cumi-cumi, the black squid. It might look a bit unattractive because it is super black but when you taste it you like it. It’s creamy and flavourful plus the squid is not chewy.

Here is my lunch at Samalona Island

Overall this was a very casual picnic at the beach, no fancy setup or whatsoever but it gives me the actual experience of life and the local way of picnic in Samalona island and also taste their home cooked food.

After lunch we took a rest and enjoy the breeze by the beach. I went for a quick tour around the small island with some friends to check out there area. There are some small local cafes, provision shops, kedai makan and local chalets for rent.
