mapKL: International Award Winning Films from Germany

For those who love International Films or German Films watch out for this.
Its gonna happen next week.
Its Free Admisson with English subtitles

International Award Winning Films from Germany

Date: 4 - 8 April, 2011
Time: 8.00 - 10.30pm
Venue: MAP @ Publika, Solaris Dutamas, Jalan Dutamas 1, Kuala Lumpur

Goethe Institute and MAP are proud to present the second series of film screenings curated by Dr Torsten Schaar, a German language lecturer at UiTM. The theme selected for this series is International Award Winning Films, celebrating German films that have received accolades in thecinema world as well as awards from the Academy Award, BAFTA, Cannes and Bavarian Film Festivals.

The screening starts off with Mephisto, a film adaptation of Klaus Mann’s novel about an ambitious stage actor who abandons his conscience and ingratiate himself with the Nazi Party to improve his career. The film won the 1981 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

Other films include Jenselt der Stille (Beyond Silence), Der Untergang (Downfall), Der Baader-Meinhoff Komplex (The Baader-Meinhoff Complex) and Die Fremde (When We Leave).

Mephisto 1981

Director: Istvan Szabo
Run Time: 139 minutes
Monday, 4 April 2011, 8.00pm

In MEPHISTO, an ambitious and talented actor (Klaus Maria Brandauer) on the verge of success marries the daughter of an important official in pre-World War II Germany in order to further his career. As the Nazi influence grows, he discards his wife and uses his new connections to become the head of the National Theatre, while tailoring his art to the
fascistic beliefs of his patrons.

Wonderful acting in all roles and a strong, balanced script gives a chilling feel for why millions of people in Germany--not just ambitious, monomaniacal actors--succumbed to the outlandish theatrical appeal of Nazism by showing the more subtle, underlying psychological appeal of fascism itself. Based
on a novel by Klaus Mann, the son of Thomas Mann, MEPHISTO, dramatically shows the self-deceptive and ultimately evil acts of an artist making his own Faustian bargain.

Jenseits der Stille (Beyond Silence) 1998
Director: Caroline Link
Run Time: 107 minutes
Tuesday, 5 April 2011, 8.00pm

Acclaimed by critics and audiences everywhere, BEYOND SILENCE is the powerful story of a young woman's battle for independence and her deaf parents' struggle to understand her gift for music. Given a clarinet as a child by her free-spirited aunt, Lara becomes a passionate and talented musician, something her parents cannot begin to understand. As she acts as communicator between her parents and the world, her passion for music intensified and she becomes determined to follow her dreams. Soon her gift threatens to tear the once close family apart and they must learn to separate their differences and expectations to bring their two worlds together again.

Der Untergang (Downfall) 2005
Director: Oliver Hirschbiegel
Run Time: 149 minutes
Wednesday, 6 April 2011, 8.00pm

The riveting subject of Downfall is nothing less than the disintegration of Adolf Hitler in mind, body, and soul. Hitler’s psychic meltdown is depicted in sobering detail, suggesting a fallen, pathetic dictator on the verge on insanity, resorting to suicide (along with Eva Braun and Joseph and Magda Goebbels) as his Nazi empire burns amidst chaos in mid-1945. While staging most of the film in the claustrophobic bunker where Hitler spent his fi nal days, director Oliver Hirschbiegel dares to show the gentler human side of “der Fuehrer”, as opposed to the pure embodiment of evil so familiar from many other Nazi-era dramas. This balanced portrayal does not inspire sympathy, however: We simply see the complexity of Hitler's character in the greater context of his inevitable downfall, and a more realistic (and therefore more horrifying) biographical portrait
of madness on both epic and intimate scales.

Der Baader-Meinhoff-Komplex 2008
Director: Uli Edel
Run Time: 143 minutes
Thursday, 7 April 2011, 8.00pm

Germany in the 1970s: Murderous bomb attacks, the threat of terrorism and the fear of the enemy inside are rocking the very foundations of the yet fragile German democracy. The radicalised children of the Nazi generation lead by Andreas Baader, Ulrike Meinhoff and Gudrun Ensslin are fi ghting a violent war against what they perceive as the new face of fascism: American imperialism supported by the German establishment, many of whom have a Nazi past.

Their aim is to create a more human society but by employing inhuman means they not only spread terror and bloodshed, they also lose their own humanity. The man who understands them is also their hunter: the head of the German police force Horst Herold. And while he succeeds in his relentless pursuit of the young terrorists, he knows he's only dealing with the tip of the iceberg.

Die Fremde (When We Leave) 2010
Director: Feo Aladag
Run Time: 119 minutes
Friday, 8 April 2011, 8.00pm

Umay (Sibel Kikelli) is a young German woman of Turkish descent, fighting for an independent and self-determined life against the resistance of her family. She sees her abusive husband and leaves Turkey to return to her family in Berlin. What ensues when she gets to Germany is a devastating journey through the darkness of a perverse patriarchal tradition. Umay struggles with questions of identity: Where does she belong? Does she have the right to live her life the way she wants to? Her struggle initiates a dynamic, which results in a life-threatening situation. This very important film raises the horrible worldwide issue of "honor killings," (5,000 each year) those that occur when male family members kill girls or women who have "dishonored" their families to win back the family's respect within the community.

Enjoy a week of internationally acclaimed German films. All films will be screened at 8.00pm at Black Box, MAP @ Publika, Dutamas.

New from The Body Shop for Spring 2011 comes ‘Brush With Fashion’, a new cruelty-free, fashion-forward make-up and accessories collection. This limited-edition collection with built-in brushes, Community Fair Trade ingredients and covetable packaging was created in collaboration with the internationally-acclaimed London College of Fashion.

The Body Shop and PJ College of Art & Design (PJCAD) are jointly organizing 'Brush with Fashion', a competition for PJCAD fashion design students to unleash their talent and creativity. Participants are required to submit two designs each for avant-garde and ready-to-wear apparel. Held in conjunction with the launch of The Body Shop's new 'Brush with Fashion' range of on-trend, environmentally sustainable and cruelty-free make-up series, the competition sets a date for finalists to present their creations at the Brush with Fashion Show on April 9, 2011 at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur.

Ten finalists will be selected from 30 entries by March 14 and provided with a capital of RM500 each by The Body Shop for the materials and accessories required to bring their sketches to life. Each fashion design finalist will then be paired with a make-up artist from The Body Shop to work together on creating the total look and feel for both designs for a catwalk show during the finals. x PJCAD is part of the INTI Education Network. INTI has worked with The Body Shop on several corporate social responsibility projects, including the Save the Temengor Forest drive and the Stop Sex Trafficking of Children and Young People march last year.

Collaborating with a leading fashion and design school is not a first for The Body Shop, as it also has a tie up with the London College of Fashion for its Spring/ Summer 2011 Look.

Available from March 2011, ‘Brush With Fashion’ is the ultimate portable, ultra-stylish make-up in Spring’s irresistible colour palette. The must-have collection combines The Body Shop make-up know-how with London College of Fashion’s cutting-edge fashion and design expertise. This on-trend make-up is ready to wear!

Stop Child Sex Trafficking Petition Handover‏

On 1st Mac, i have post Stop Sex Trafficking. Sign Up The Body Shop Petition to urge and share with my friends to support this campaign. Welldone! to The Body Shop Malaysia team has collected more than 10,000 signatures.

On 22nd Mac, The Body Shop presented the Home Ministry with more than 10,000 signatures in the hopes of putting an end to the trafficking of children and young people in Malaysia.

Some 100 people made up of staff of The Body Shop, Tenaganita, PS the Children and Nursalam took part in this event and marched down Putrajaya to the office of the Home Ministry where members of MAPO (Majlis Anti Pemerdagangan Orang dan Antipenyeludupan Migran) were ready to receive us.

These signatures were collected through the efforts of The Body Shop employees throughout the country after Deputy Home Minister, Dato’ Wira Abu Seman Yusop launched the campaign together with The Body Shop in August last year.

The campaign called for ratification of the Optional Protocol of the Sale of Children under the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) by the Malaysian Government. The campaign was to create awareness amongst the public on the issue of human trafficking particularly on the exploitation of the child.

Every year, more than 2.5 million people are trafficked around the world. Out of this alarming number, 1.2 million are under the age of 18. Globally, this results in USD27 billion in profits which is third largest sum for international crimes after illegal drugs and arms trafficking. This matter is of concern to Malaysia which is not just a destination but also a source and transit point for young people who are trafficked. The issue of baby trading syndicate is also close scrutiny of the authorities.

As such, the whole nation has a duty to play in putting an end to this predicament. While we do have an Anti-Trafficking and Anti-Smuggling Act 2007 in place, the specific awareness on the trafficking of children for sexual purposes is lacking. It is crucial for Malaysia to adopt a comprehensive strategy specifically focusing on protecting children and ensuring that child rights are upheld, in particular the right to sexual protection.

In line with the National Action Plan Against Trafficking in Persons (2010-2015), we are taking the initiative to draw awareness to this problem while adopting a multi-sector approach between government agencies, NGOs, international organizations and community groups in the hopes that we obtain a positive and collective response and action to the situation. Hope the quality protection and rehabilitation of young people who are trafficked will be consistent with international standards of human rights at every level regardless of color and creed.

YES: Penang Food Hunt

Amazing things happen when you say YES

Food, Friends, Fun plus Speed Test

On this Food Hunt trip, we got to try out the fastest YES 4G mobile internet. Experience the broadband mobile coverage and uninterrupted high speed of Yes 4G all along the North South Highway even the mpv is moving at above 120km/h…

The journey start on 12th Mac (Sat) at The Ritz Carlton at 8.00am. Light breakfast were served before the presentation start.

Presentation by Tan Sri Francis Yeoh, Director of YTL

FaceTime represents mobile video conferencing. Yes 4G mobile internet will give FaceTime speed, clarity and mobility.

YTL Communications Overview

Presentation by Wing Lee, CEO of YTL Communications

Portfolio of Yes 4G Devices

After the presentation, we are set to go. Penang here we come… There are 4 Toyota Alphard and1 YES Sprinter that will be taking us to Penang. We are all given a YES Huddle, 2 apples and 1 bottle of water before we start our journey. So nice, everything was well prepared.

We are split into 4 person in a team and each team in an mpv. I am in the same team as James (Yes4G), Mei and Arystle.

Along the way to Penang, we got to test out the YES 4G coverage. We start to tweet about the road trip add #YesPenang.

We also run Speed Test (speedtest.net) at different area/spots. Most of the areas we passed have YES coverage except the certain hilly area when we approach Ipoh. Other than that the internet speed is good. Even at some places there we no handphone signal and we could tweet using Yes

Our 1st stop was Bidor Curry House.

Its makan time :)

We had banana leaf rice with chicken, mutton, fish, vegetables and many side dishes including papadam… yummy my favourite...

James and few guys went over to Bidor Pun Chun ‘tapau’ Herbal Duck Noodles and biscuits. This was how I ate my herbal duck noodles on banana leaf…

Next stop was at Aun Kheng Lim Salted Chicken in Ipoh.

Group photos

After that we, walked across the street to Funny Mountain traditional tau fu fah and soya drink.

I took this picture while I am queuing for my drinks.

My team except James switched from mpv to Yes Sprinter so that we could charged our laptops, huddle, mobile and make phone calls via Yes 4G.

Everyone say cheese...

Running speedtest inside YES Sprinter from Ipoh to Penang

Finally we arrived Penang Island. We stopped over at Yes, Queensbay Mall

Checked in Vistana Hotel Penang. My apartment mate, Ee Ping.

Freshen up and get ready for chinese course dinner at the hotel banquet room.

Here is the menu... lots of food

Morning breakfast at New Cathay coffee shop. We had char koay teow, wan tan mee, noodle soup and etc…

Waiting for our flight back to kl at Penang International Airport

We ate, laughed, had fun along the trip and also online most of the time using Yes Huddle.

Yes 4G network is 3 to 5 times faster than 3G simply because it was designed for the Internet of today, while 3G was built primarily for voice. When 3G networks try to move data, it easily gets congested and slows down.

Yes Plan

At Yes, you only pay for what you use. The lowest entry paln for mobile internet with voice. On top of charging the lowest rates, Yes also charge you only for what you use. It doesn't matter whether you call another network more, sms only on weekends or upload 50 photos every day. It will only cost you 9 sen for 1-minute call, 1 sms o3 3 MB of data.

The fastest 4G mobile internet with voice has become more affordable with Yes valuepacks. Save money while you surf, call and sms with Valuepack 68 and Valuepack 150.
